it's old hat to me now

today’s letter is about getting cancelled, a topic a few people asked me to write about. thank you in advance for reading, and again, I’m always soliciting feedback on what you’d like to read about in the future. no promises but I’ll certainly do my best!

below is a non-exhaustive list of things I’ve said that I’ve been cancelled for on twitter, by “the left” (I’ve been cancelled by “the right” for saying things like “I hate Israel,” or complaining about the cost of a medical bill, but that’s to be expected.)

• socialist men rarely date socialist women and it’s weird and corny

  • take 1

  • take 2

  • this is no longer my #1 life’s annoyance — I’m pretty sure it wasn’t when I made these tweets (I’m hyperbolic, it’s not illegal yet!) — but I see it often and still believe a lot of leftist men are weird, annoying, and sexist!

• burnout isn’t real for volunteer organizers

  • I don’t agree with this anymore, but I still think that people who complain about this (burnout from their volunteer organizing) all the time are annoying.

• we shouldn’t fear-monger about covid and act like everyone who gets it will become permanently disabled

  • unfortunately I had to delete this because it actually got too crazy for even me to handle, but here’s a screenshot

• people shouldn’t smoke on the subway

  • obviously the pushback here was semi-related to my previous tweet about fear-mongering around covid

  • Freddie deBoer wrote about this here lol

• the protest outside Goldie’s was really dumb

  • I deleted this (so no link, sorry, but here's a follow up) not because I don’t agree with what I said — I do — but because I didn’t feel like spending all day arguing, and I didn’t want to add to what was becoming an anti-Palestinian pile-on. I admit that it probably wasn’t a thought that needed to be shared publicly.

• vandalizing synagogues is not useful in the fight for Palestinian liberation

• it’s good for Israeli citizens to refuse to join the IDF

• I’m planning to vote for Joe Biden in the general election 

  • it’s ironic because this twitter thread was all about how Biden-supporters should stop complaining about “the left” online and go knock some doors — I was essentially defending people’s right not to vote for Biden — but I got cancelled anyway. woe is me!!!

again, this is just a sample — it doesn’t include any other times I’ve gone “viral” or any intra-DSA drama — but I obviously had to include some of the greatest hits!
